Its capital city, Buenos Aires, is known for its European architecture, tango dancing, and soccer passion. Argentina is famous for its cuisine, including grilled meats, empanadas, and dulce de leche. The country is also renowned for its wine production, with the Mendoza region being the most famous wine-producing area. Argentina has a rich cultural history, with influences from its indigenous peoples, Spanish colonialism, and waves of immigration from Europe and the Middle East. Argentina has produced notable writers such as Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortazar, as well as musicians like Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel, who popularized the tango genre. The Buenos Aires
Affair

by Manuel Puig

This novel is a masterpiece of Argentine literature and tells the story of a painter named Juan Pablo Castel, who becomes obsessed with a woman he meets at an exhibition. The book explores themes of love, jealousy, and the search for meaning in life. Sábato’s writing style is powerful and deeply psychological, making this a must-read for fans of Latin American literature.

This experimental novel is a classic of 20th century literature and tells the story of Horacio Oliveira, an Argentine intellectual who is searching for meaning in his life. The book is known for its non-linear structure and unique narrative style, which invites the reader to participate in the story and make their own choices about how to read it.

This collection of short stories by one of Argentina’s greatest writers is a must-read for fans of magical realism. The title story, “The Aleph,” is a masterpiece of the genre and tells the story of a man who discovers a point in space that contains all other points. Borges’ writing is thought-provoking and deeply philosophical, making this book a classic of Argentine literature.

Another collection of short stories by Borges, this book contains some of his most famous works, including “The Garden of Forking Paths” and “The Library of Babel.” Like The Aleph, these stories are known for their philosophical depth and their use of magical realism to explore complex themes.

This noir novel is set in 1930s Buenos Aires and follows a group of characters whose lives intersect in unexpected ways. The story is full of intrigue, political upheaval, and social commentary, with a touch of forbidden romance.

Nine
Queens

Have you ever wondered what happens if you’re in distress for too long? Wild Tales gives you the answer: chaos, anger, and complete escalation. Damián Szifron presents the viewer with 6 short and explosive stories. Each story revolving around misunderstandings, arguments, and revenge. Every one of them goes from interesting to disturbing very quickly until it escalates into one big show full of fireworks. A very entertaining and high-paste movie and one of my all-time favorites.

Benjamín Esposito, a retired federal officer, decides to spend his retirement days writing a novel. The topic of his novel will be the unsolved case of the rape and murder of a young girl. He was never able to let this case go and decides to investigate it further. Initially, his journey brings him in contact with his former boss (whom he had an unexpressed love for), but as soon as he tells her what he’s doing, the ambiance changes. As he dives further into the case, flashbacks and unpleasant memories gradually darken the story until he’s forced to look the unpleasant truth in the eye. A gripping thriller that won an Oscar for best international film.

Roberto is a grumpy small business owner who believes in order and diligence. His grumpiness, he explains, is a direct result of fighting in the Falkland war. His orderliness probably stems from this time too. As a hobby, Roberto collects absurd news articles to prove that the world is going mad. Due to his own diligence, he believes that this madness will not affect him. Until one day, a helpless Chinese man is thrown out of a driving taxi. Roberto frustratingly decides to help the man who doesn’t speak a word of Spanish. Through this encounter, the madness of the world seems to affect him after all, much like his collection of stories. Cuento Chino is a simple yet intriguingly funny movie.

Rafael has an ex-wife, a daughter, a girlfriend, a romantic dad, and a mum with dementia, but above all, he has a restaurant. His restaurant, once belonging to his parents, takes all his time and energy. What may have started as an act of love is now an all-consuming endeavor and gradually taking away everything he loves. When, one day, his father decides to remarry his demented mum, and the stress becomes too much and Rafael is forced to rethink his life decisions. Although simple at first sight, it’s difficult not to be moved by this romantic drama.

Marcos and Juan are two con-artists who met in a convenience store. Marcos, the more experienced of the two, teaches Juan the tricks of being a swindler, and the two men start working together. Then, an interesting opportunity comes their way; Marcos is contacted about a set of rare stamps (the nine queens). The plan is to forge the stamps and sell them to a businessman who’s in a rush to leave the country. Although it seems like a golden opportunity, tricksters trick, get tricked, and distrust, making it challenging to find out who’s scamming who at the end of the day. Nine Queens is a fast-paced movie full of twists. The only thing you have to remember is that nothing is what it seems.

Music

Argentina has a rich and diverse music scene that reflects the country’s cultural and ethnic heritage. Tango, a music and dance style born in the streets of Buenos Aires in the late 19th century, is often considered the quintessential Argentine music genre. Other traditional Argentine music styles include the chacarera, zamba, and milonga. In addition to these folk music styles, Argentina has also produced many internationally renowned rock and pop musicians, such as Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati, and Shakira (who was born in Colombia but rose to fame in Argentina). The music of Argentina also reflects the country’s political and social history, with many artists using their music to protest against authoritarian regimes and social injustice. The Nueva Canción movement of the 1960s and 70s, for example, blended traditional folk music with politically charged lyrics, and had a profound impact on Argentine culture and society.
