The problem

The Challenge

"Can I disagree with my boss without damaging the relationship?"

The Netherlands has a reputation for being easy to settle in. Everyone speaks English, the infrastructure works, people are friendly. But after an initial 'honeymoon' phase, you realize it also has some challenges

Should you push back on your manager's idea, or stay quiet? Is it okay to say no? Why is it so hard to make real friends? And should you actually learn Dutch, even though everyone tells you you don't need to?

Although these questions feel personal, they're cultural. Every person new to the Netherlands struggles with them, but with the right framework, they can be overcome.

Your struggles aren't personal. They're cultural.

About

Why me?

I'm Thomas, a Dutch intercultural trainer and the founder of Cultural Reads, a platform for understanding cultures on a deeper level through books, movies, music, and interviews.

Latin American culture has been a big part of my life. I've lived in Ecuador, Spain, and Brazil, worked with many Latin American companies throughout the region, and I'm married to a Colombian. I speak Spanish fluently (C2) and learned Brazilian Portuguese.

After years of seeing the same challenges emerge with friends, colleagues, and my wife, I recognized clear patterns in how Latin American professionals struggle to adjust. I decided to build on that knowledge and become a certified intercultural trainer to help others navigate the transition more smoothly.
