12 French Global Sound Artists You Need To Know
Few countries have had a cultural influence on the contemporary world as France and there are reasons why it produces successful global sound artists. The
Rock music has many subgenres like indie rock, alternative rock, post-rock, art rock, among many others. In fact, it’s the most people can keep track of and almost all of them have the word rock in the name.
But shoegaze?
The name gives you nothing about the music. It sounds more like a bad habit than a music genre.
Yet, shoegaze is a subgenre of alternative and indie rock that emerged in the late 1980s in the United Kingdom. It features constant guitar riffing (basically pushing guitars to their limit), reverb sounds, and vocals that shoegaze bands keep low intentionally.
The name itself has an interesting reason because guitarists in these bands spent their live performances looking down at their pedalboards to manage difficult pedal effects.
And by the 1990s, the shoegaze genre had given famous records from My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, Slowdive’s Souvlaki to Ride’s Nowhere.
I will continue to discuss its evolution while discussing the top 15 popular shoegaze bands.
Ride, one could say that, is one of the founding bands of shoegaze music. Emerging from the same late-80s alternative rock scene, Ride experimented with dense guitar effects.
They released three EPs in 1990, but it was their debut album Nowhere that became a hit. They followed it with another hit album, Going Black Again. These 2 shoegaze albums remain one of the classics of shoegaze music.
Some songs on these albums went on to top the UK Singles Chart. Vapour Trail and Leave Them All Behind, from the second album charted in the UK Top 10.
Their success with shoegaze was short because of the rise of Britpop. So, they went back to traditional rock albums like Carnival of Light and Tarantula.
Although this shift divided critics and fans, Ride was happy to experiment. After disbanding in 1996, Ride reunited in 2014 amid new global interest in shoegaze, releasing reunion albums.
My Bloody Valentine is probably one of the best shoegaze bands, after Ride, from Dublin. This band was innovative in their use of guitar effects, unconventional tunings, and layered production. So basically, less traditional structure and more about atmosphere.
Isn’t Anything, which came out in 1988, was one of their breakthrough shoegaze albums. However, it was Loveless, setting the benchmark for shoegaze genre. It has singles like “Only Shallow” and “Soon”, which brought mainstream chart success.
Since the album’s production was intense and costly, it brought a long hiatus to new material. And due to the rise of other musical genres, the band remained inactive throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
But they did come back with the album “m b v”, two decades after the 1993 album.

Flyying Colours is one of the modern shoegaze bands, so you can take them as revivalists. The band takes influence from classic UK shoegaze music of bands like Ride and Slowdive while adding noise-pop textures.
The popularity of their earlier EPs Flyying Colours and ROYGBIV have taken them to tours in the US, UK, and Europe.
Their debut album Mindfulness came in 2016 and they followed it with Fantasy Country with a delicate balance between atmosphere and structure. You Never Know is their latest album from 2023.
“1987” and “I Don’t Want to Let You Down” are some of the most popular shoegaze songs on community-driven platforms rather than mainstream charts.
DIIV is an American dreampop and shoegaze band. Initially, they were indie rock just like most bands but became part of 2010s shoegaze revival.
DIIV came out with their debut album Oshin in 2012. It has songs like “Doused” and “How Long Have You Known?”, bringing them huge streams in alternative playlists.
The second album, Is the Is Are, was a commercial success. It debuted on the Billboard 200, bringing shoegaze music to wider audiences.
After some member changes, they came up with Deceiver, which has shoegaze and grunge influences. This shoegaze album also drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine.
Overall, DIIV remains one of the modern shoegaze bands with a vibrant mix of classic and contemporary shoegaze music.
Alcest is the only French shoegaze band in our list; initially it was a raw black metal project. By the mid-2000s, the band shifted its direction to melodic atmospheric sound by fusing black metal with shoegaze. An approach that later became “blackgaze.”
Their first full-length album, Souvenirs d’un autre monde is a fusion of tremolo guitars and metal. The second album, Écailles de lune, has more metal while retaining shoegaze atmospherics, making them one of the best shoegaze bands.
Les Voyages de l’Âme (2012) further expanded their audience internationally and solidified their reputation within experimental metal circles.
Some of their songs like Kodama and Spiritual Instinct have charted in multiple countries. In fact, Spiritual Instinct went for several European Top 50 rankings.

Tokyo Shoegazer is one of the best Japanese shoegaze bands. The lineup of the band included members from Japan’s indie and alternative scene, a usual trend for shoegaze bands.
Their debut album Crystallize is one of their most popular shoegaze albums. It features long, distortion-heavy tracks with layered guitars and low-mixed vocals. So, it’s much closer to the early 1990s UK shoegaze rather than J-pop or Japanese rock.
Crystallize also has two tribute songs to My Bloody Valentine from their album, Yellow Loveless.
They have followed their debut albums with three more albums. Unlike other Japanese shoegaze bands, they haven’t ventured into other musical genres.

Forsaken Autumn is one of the earliest and popular shoegaze bands from mainland China. At a time when China’s independent music was mostly post-punk and experimental rock, Forsaken Autumn brought shoegaze to Chinese audiences.
Whenere is their debut album from 2008 with a unique soft male–female vocal interplay. But it was the second album, Re:formation, which was successful in connecting them to global shoegaze music listeners.

Parannoul is a pseudonymous shoegaze musician from South Korea. He works independently and outside mainstream K-pop. His shoegaze albums and songs within them have English names but he sings in Korean.
He has released four solo albums: Let’s Walk on the Path of a Blue Cat, To See the Next Part of the Dream, After the Magic, and Sky Hundred.
The second album in particular drew global shoegaze music fans in music communities. He has also collaborated with the international rap collective Fax Gang on the album Scattersun.
South Korea is quite creative in ways it produces art. And it is evident from their modern Korean books and Korean movies.
Terraplana is one of the most popular Brazilian shoegaze bands right now. The group blends classic shoegaze elements of reverb-heavy guitars and soft vocals with contemporary indie music.
Just like a Japanese shoegaze band, Parannoul, Terraplana also sing in their native language of Portuguese.
The band released their first EP, EP Exílio in 2017. Their first album, Olhar Pra Trás, came out in 2023, with critical success. In 2025, they released their second album, Natural, expanding their sonic range.
Terraplana have performed at major music festivals like South by Southwest (SXSW), Primavera Sound São Paulo, and Coolritiba Festival.
They are also part of a lineup of a big music festival, Lollapalooza Brazil 2026, which is happening in March, 2026.

Slow Crush is one of the best shoegaze bands from Belgium, and probably from Europe. They released their debut EP Ease in 2017. It has a dense, reverb-heavy sound typical of shoegaze music but with alternative and heavier guitars.
In 2018, they released their debut album Aurora. The album was a commercial success and got strong coverage in alternative press.
Hush is their second album with heavier sonic sounds while maintaining atmospheric depth. Their recent album is Thirst, which came out in 2025.
Apart from regular album releases, the band has actively toured Europe, U.S and more recently, North America.

Shoegaze music has never been mainstream, neither shoegaze artists have had any such ambitions. Its strength is in restraint, and experimentation and mixing music that resists commercialization.
Interestingly, the shoegaze genre continues to thrive with new experimentations. It is very much unlike other sub-musical genres.
That’s why, there are many best shoegaze bands that continue to evolve, experiment and while sticking to classic shoegaze music.
